*** Book Concept ***

My name is Linda Maloney and I am a former EA-6B Naval Aviator and AEDO (Aerospace Engineering Duty Officer). I retired from the Navy in 2004 and currently living near NAS Patuxent River in Southern Maryland with my husband and two little boys. I am in the process of putting together a book titled “My Mom Flies” and I am looking for women from all branches of the military who are or have been aviators and also are moms. The title MY MOM FLIES” would be multifaceted >>> the physical “my mom flies” and the description of who these moms are - strong, inspirational women. I have been bouncing around the idea of a book for several years now and the topic has always been associated with women in aviation. Now as a mom I have a desire to pass down not only my flight gear to my son, but also the experiences, photos and stories of my career in military aviation. If you are not a mom but know of a woman you would recommend, would you please forward this information along with my point of contact information?

I read a book a number of years ago called “Those Wonderful Women and Their Flying Machines.” It is a really great book about the WASPs (Women Army Service Pilots) during World War II timeframe. My friend Kara Hultgreen (the first woman F-14 pilot who died in an F-14 ejection in 1994) had given it to me as a birthday present several years ago and I so enjoyed the book with all the WASP’s stories, experiences, pictures and historical information. I especially enjoyed learning about each woman’s background and military experiences.

I would like to tell a similar modern day story but one with a little bit different focus…one that focuses on stories of mom’s who are or have been military aviators. My idea is to develop a coffee table-style book with several women aviator stories along with pictures. The women would be from all branches of the military. I estimate that there would be approximately 50 - 70 women in the book in the age range of approximately 20-50 years old. It would be a larger type book with bigger type print and glossy photos. Each women aviator would have two pages consisting of stories/experiences on one page and picture(s) on the facing page.

My goal is for this book to be positive, inspiring and encouraging and also multi-faceted:
- I want the book to be general enough that it is a book that anyone would like to pick up and look at….it would tell real life stories, display pictures that most folks don’t see every day, and also provide historical information.
- I also want the book to be inspirational for children…not only our own children but for every child that has a dream they want to achieve.
- I also want the book to be a legacy and preservation of memories that we moms pass down to our own children. I do scrap booking with Creative Memories and lots of military wives create scrapbooks for their husbands. Creative Memories’ concept is to “Preserve the Past, Enrich the Present, and Inspire Hope for the Future” with pictures and journaling. That is my overall concept for this book >>> Preserve the Past, Enrich the Present, and Inspire Hope for the Future with stories about Women Aviators (who are also moms).

A quick side note is that my step mom just died a few years ago and I had the task of going through her things. It is amazing what you learn about someone when they pass away. I thought I knew almost everything about her life; however going through her things gave me such an insight into who she was as a person and as a mom. It really gave me a deeper appreciation of her life and the lives she impacted. That experience gave me increased inspiration to do this book to tell stories to our following generations that may never be told and to preserve those memories.

I will take your story/bio and modify into a general format but keeping with your telling of your story and your personality. (e.g. your name, where you were born, childhood experiences, schooling, flying experience before military, what inspired you to join military and fly, what you did in military, etc…..all up to what you are doing now and what you want to pass down to your own children, and your hopes and dreams for them). I want each mom's personality and experiences to shine through in the personal way each mom tells her story. Once I finalize the book prior to submission to the publisher, I will forward back to you for final editing approval.

I am in the process right now of partnering with women to participate in the book and working with them to develop their bios and experiences. I am also working with a couple editor/writer colleagues in pursuing a good agent and publisher. If you decide to participate, please start working on your bio utilizing the biography outline I have provided on the website. Please customize your input as you see necessary. Once I receive your draft input, I will get together with you by phone, email or in person to discuss the information and fill in as necessary.

Thank you in advance for your consideration in participating in this project. I am very excited about the book and look forward to all the great stories and pictures. Several women have already jumped onboard with the project and I think it is going to be a great adventure and a wonderful book. If you know of other women you would recommend for the book, I would love to talk with them. Please forward this information to them. They can be women who are still in or are now out of the military and are in the age range of 20-50 years old. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone.

Sincerely,

Linda L. Maloney
