May 06 Update
We have quite an amazing group of women participating in "My Mom Flies." I think we are up to about 80 women who are partnering with me on the book.
- Women in the National Guard(s), Coast Guard, Marine
Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force
- Women who are still in the military and women who have
separated/retired and women in the Reserves
- Women who are stay-at-home moms
- Women on deployments (shore-based and on aircraft
carriers)
- Women in the corporate world
- Women astronauts
- Women airline or corporate pilots
- Women getting ready to have their first or another child
- Women with grandchildren
- Women who have started their own businesses
- etc...
I am very excited about the project and want to thank each one of you for participating. I am very honored that you want to be a part of the book. “My Mom Flies” is really going to be a legacy of love for our own children and a source of encouragement for all the other young kids who can see that their dreams are achievable. I am also excited that the general population will have the opportunity to get a view of who our women are in the military.
I still have much to do on the development of the book. I will be sending out Query letters to different agents in September as I search for an agent to represent the book. Once an agent indicates interest in the book, I will then submit a proposal. Once of the key areas of the proposal is to provide a market research of the different types of markets that the book will be of interest and also provide market research on when, who and how to market the book. If you have any inputs in regards to marketing, please feel free to forward your inputs. I will also include a book sample in the proposal with 3-5 moms stories and photos. I will contact you if I will be using your input for the proposal.
Draft Input - I would like draft inputs by the end of August 2006. I am expecting baby #2 in Sept and really would like to wrap up as much as possible by then. That deadline can be adjusted if you need more time. Please just let me know. If you feel like you do not have the time to write, please let me know and we can develop your bio/story via phone or in person. I have gotten some really wonderful inputs and can forward those to you if you would like to see an example of types of bios/stories. There are some condensed examples on the 'Example Story/Bio" Page.
Please start working on getting your photos together, both personal and professional. I am estimating that I will need a minimum of 8 photos and a maximum of 15. Hardcopy or electronic photos are acceptable. If you would like me to make copies of your hardcopy photos, I will return your original photos within two weeks of receiving them. Also, if you have any photos that you think would be great for the www.mymomflies.com homepage, please forward those. I am developing a collage of pictures of moms and families on the homepage.
Again, I would like to thank you all for partnering with me on this great adventure! I still have room in the book for more women to participate. If you know of someone that you think might be interested, please forward along the website address and ask them to contact me. I have most of your point of contact information but if you could, please send me a short email and let me know you are on track for an end of August submittal (or need more time) and also provide me your updated contact information (address, phone numbers, emails along with name of husband and kids (ages also)). I am developing a database of all the women participating.
Below is outline of what I need if you would like to participate in the book.
- First, please review the book concept. Navigate to the 'book concept' page.
- Draft Input by end of Aug 06. Write your input in 1st person. I originally was going to write the different women's stories from a 3rd person perspective, but I have gotten so many wonderful stories from women who tell their stories from their point of view and for me, it really changes how the story is told. It seems more personal; the mom's personalities really come through and the stories are really heart-felt. I will edit what you provide but will keep your story as if you were telling it. I will work with you on finalizing your input and you will have final editing approval up until the book gets accepted by a publisher.
- Professional biography or resume (military and/or civilian)
- Pictures - Start thinking about photos that you think would be good for the book. You can provide hardcopy or electronic copies. If they are electronic, you can send them to me via email or via a CD ROM. I will return any hardcopies to you within 2 weeks after I receive them. Photos that you may want to include: childhood photos, college, flight school, fleet squadron photos, current family photos, etc. Please try to include a current photo of your family (husband, kids, pets, etc..)...
